1) Q: What or who is DriveTest?

A: The Driver Examination Centres formerly managed by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation have been renamed DriveTest and is operated by Serco DES Inc. under a 10 year licence agreement with MTO.

2) Q: What does Graduated Licensing means?

A: As of April 1, 1994, all new drivers applying for a car or motorcycle licence will need to complete a two-step licensing process before they can qualify for a full license privilege. Graduated licensing lets new drivers get driving experience and skills gradually. The two steps licensing process takes at least 20 months to complete.

3) Q:How does Graduated Licensing work?

A: A new driver applying for the "G" class of licenses will be issued a" G1" licence once he or she has successfully completed the vision and knowledge test. Applicant must wait for a year, unless he or she has completed a Ministry approved Beginner’s Driver Education program, before he or she is eligible to attempt for a "G2" road test. Upon successful completion of a G2 road test, applicant will be issued a" G2" licence. Applicant must wait for a year before he or she is eligible to attempt for a "G" road test. Upon successful completion of a "G" road test, applicant will be issued the full "G" licence. The applicant is given 5 years to complete the GLS.

A new driver applying for the "M" class of licenses will be issued a Class M1 licence after successfully completing the vision and knowledge test. Applicant must wait for a minimum of 60 days before the he or she is eligible to attempt for an "M2" road test. Upon successful completion of the "M2" road test, applicant will be issued an M2 licence. Applicant must wait for 22 months unless he or she has completed an approved motorcycle safety course, before he or she is eligible to attempt for an "M" road test. Upon successful completion of the "M" road test, applicant will be issued an "M" licence

Note: You are only exempt from taking the "M2 road test" if you have completed an approved Motorcycle Safety Course which included a road test.

4) Q: I would like to apply for an Ontario Driver’s Licence. What are the requirements?

A: To apply for an Ontario Driver’s Licence,

  • You must be 16 years old at the time of application.
  • You will be required to present acceptable ID for proof of legal name, date of birth and current signature.
  • You will be required to complete a vision test and pass the knowledge test.
  • You must pay all applicable fees.

5) Q:What are the requirements for a classified "A" or "D" licence?

A: To obtain a class "A" or "D" licence

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must hold a valid Ontario class G licence.
  • Pass the applicable knowledge test.
  • Meet the Ministry approved vision standards.
  • Provide a satisfactory medical certificate on the application. Medical requirements must be satisfied before any other test (except) vision may be administered.

6) Q: What are the requirements for a class "C" or "F" licence?

A: To obtain a class "C" or "F" licence

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must hold a valid Ontario class G or higher licence
  • Meet the Ministry-approved vision standards.
  • Provide a medical certificate upon application. Ministry-approved medical requirements must be satisfied before any other test (except) vision may be administered.
  • Pass a road test examination at Drive Test, or obtain a certificate of competence from a recognized authority by passing a vision screening, a knowledge test and a driving test in a vehicle of appropriate size.

7) Q: What are the requirements for a class "B" or "E" licence?

A: To obtain a class "B" or "E" licence

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must hold a valid Ontario class G or higher licence.
  • Meet Ministry- approved vision standards.
  • Provide a medical certificate upon application. Ministry- approved medical requirements must be satisfied before any other test (except) vision may be administered.
  • Pass a criminal record search.
  • Have knowledge of bus equipment maintenance and passenger safety and control.
  • Have successfully completed a school bus driver improvement course approved by the Ministry and be able to show proof of successful completion with a valid course certificate.
  • Pass a road test examination at DriveTest or obtain a certificate of competence from a recognized authority by passing a vision screening, a knowledge test and a driving test in a vehicle of appropriate size.
  • Not have accumulated more than 6 demerit points on his/her driving record.
  • Not have had a driver’s license under suspension at any time within the preceding 12 months as a result of having been convicted or found guilty of any offences outlined in the Driver’s handbook for Bus.

8) Q: What are the requirements for a motorcycle licence?

A: To obtain a motorcycle licence

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You must pass the vision test.
  • You must pass knowledge test of traffic signs, knowledge of motorcycles and the rules of the road.
  • You will be required to pass two road tests to become fully licensed.

9) Q: What are the requirements for obtaining a driver instructor’s licence?

A: To obtain a Driving Instructor’s Licence

  • You must hold a valid driver’s license other than class G1, G2, M1, M2, M(L)
  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • You must have no demerits on your driver’s record
  • Pass a terminal check to ensure you meet licensing requirements
  • Meet Ministry approved vision standards
  • Pass a G1 knowledge test(there is a one year wait period following two unsuccessful attempts)
  • Pass a G2 highway test(there is a one year wait period following two unsuccessful attempts)
  • Pass a police record search
  • Complete a MTO-approved Driving Instructor Course.

10) Q: Can I shorten the time it takes to get a full car or motorcycle license?

A: Yes. Upon completion of a Ministry approved driver education course, you will be eligible to take the G2 road test in 8 months instead of a year.

Motorcycle drivers who completed a motorcycle safety course in level 1 (Class M1) can move into level 2 (Class M2) after 60 days. Upon completion of a ministry approved safety course in Level 2 (Class M2), you will be eligible to take the M road test in 18 months instead of 24 months to obtain your M licence.

Applicants who are enrolled on or after Sept. 29, 2008 in a BDE program with an MTO approved Course Provider or Driving School will be certified online after course completion. DriveTest will not accept paper certificates in lieu of online certification. Please be advised that you will not be permitted to take a road test if you have not been certified online by your Course Provider or Driving School.

11) Q: What should accompanying drivers do?

A: If you are going to be an accompanying driver, it's a good idea to re-read the Driver's Handbook to refresh your knowledge of the rules of the road.

Accompanying drivers help new drivers develop their skills, remind them about the rules of the road and warn them about dangers they may not see.

Accompanying drivers advise new drivers about courteous, defensive driving, and, if necessary, stop other passengers from distracting the driver.

Accompanying drivers are also there to take over driving if you need to use a 400-series highway or continue a trip after midnight. Since they may have to drive, they must have less than the legal suspension limit of .05 per cent blood alcohol.

12) Q: Do I need to book an appointment for a knowledge test?

A: No, you do not need an appointment for a knowledge test. Please arrive at least an hour prior to closing to allow sufficient time to be processed.

15) Q: I am from another country, which has a reciprocal agreement with Ontario, what is required of me to be able to do an exchange of license?

A: You will be required to present acceptable ID for proof of legal name, date of birth and current signature. You will be required to present a valid driver’s license from your country of origin. If your driver’s license is not in English or French, it must be accompanied by a written translation from a qualified translator, ATIO Certified or Candidate.

If you have an existing driver licensing record in Ontario and the name on your current driver’s license does not match your record in Ontario, you are required to provide a supporting document (e.g. Marriage Certificate, Change of Name Certificate) in order to link your records before you can do an exchange of license.

16) Q: I am from another country which does not have a reciprocal agreement with Ontario but have driving experience , What is required of me to apply for a Driver’s Licence in Ontario and how can I get credit for my driving experience?

A: You will be required to present acceptable ID for proof of legal name, date of birth and current signature. You will be required to present a valid driver’s licence from your country of origin. If your driver’s license is not in English or French, it must be accompanied by a written translation from a qualified translator, ATIO Certified or Candidate.

If you have more than 12 months driving experience and would like to get credit for your driving experience, you will be required to obtain a "Letter of Authentication" from the Embassy, Consulate or High Commissioner’s Office representing your jurisdiction. If your "Letter of Authentication" is not in English or French, it must be accompanied by a written translation from a qualified translator, ATIO Certified or Candidate.

We also accept letters from foreign licensing authorities provided it is original, on letterhead, dated within the past six months and in English or French. If not in English or French it must be accompanied by a written translation from a qualified translator, ATIO Certified or Candidate.

17) Q: What are the requirements for a "Letter of Authentication"?

A: A letter of authentication from the Embassy, Consulate or High Commissioner’s office, or directly from the licensing authority in the originating country.

  • Must be in English or French.
  • Must be accompanied by a written translation from a qualified translator (see our requirements for a qualified translator at http://www.drivetest.ca/en/license/qualTran.aspx) if not in English or French.
  • Must be dated no more than 6 months prior to application date
  • Must be on Embassy, Consulate or High Commissioner’s official letterhead paper.
  • Must clearly state that it is certifying the duration of the applicant’s driving experience.
  • Must indicate that the applicant holds a valid licence from that jurisdiction. License cannot be expired or suspended.
  • Must indicate the class of vehicle permitted to drive.

18) Q: I qualify for a reciprocal licence but proof of my driving experience is not shown on my licence, what other documents can I present to show proof of my driving experience?

A: A letter from the Transportation office or official driving record from your jurisdiction is also acceptable. The letter must confirm the date first licensed and the length of time you have been driving and that your driver’s licence is not expired or under suspension. The letter must not be more than 6 months old at the time of application.

Please be advised that the following United States jurisdictions: Illinois, New Jersey including non-commercial licence holders from Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Vermont must provide a driving abstract from their jurisdiction dated within 6 months confirming their driving experience irregardless of whether their license shows proof of experience.

19) Q: I have moved to Ontario and have a driver’s licence from another province/country, am I permitted to drive in Ontario?

A: If you moved to Ontario from another province/country, you are legally allowed to drive in Ontario for 60 days after arrival at which time you are required to apply for an Ontario Driver’s license in order to drive legally in Ontario.

20) Q: I have moved to Ontario and have an International Driver’s Licence, am I permitted to drive in Ontario?

A: Yes, you are legally allowed to drive in Ontario for 90 days after arrival at which time you are required to apply for an Ontario Driver’s licence in order to drive legally in Ontario. Once you have an Ontario Driver’s Licence, your Out of Country or Out of Province Licence is no longer valid.

21) Q: My citizenship card does not have my date of birth, what other acceptable documents can I present to support my date of birth?

A: You may get a sworn affidavit stating your date of birth and why it is not on your identification. You will also need supporting documents such as School or Church records Employment records or an Insurance Policy that has been valid for at least three years.

22) Q: I have a "G" licence that is expired for more than a year but less than 3 years, how can I renew my licence?

A: If your hold a "G" license that is expired for more than a year but less than 3 years, you will be required to go to any DriveTest centre for a vision test before you can renew your license.

23) Q: I have a "G" licence that is expired for more than 3 years but less than 10 years, how can I renew my licence?

A: If you hold a "G" licence that is expired for more than 3 years but less than 10 years, you will be required to

  • Take a vision test if your vision test has expired.
  • Pass the knowledge test.
  • Pass the G2 road test and the G road test.
  • Wait time does not apply to you.
  • A ten day wait time is applicable for any unsuccessful road test

24) Q: I have a "G" licence that is expired for more than 10 years, how can I renew my licence?

A: If you hold a "G" licence that is expired for more than ten years, you are required to commence the GLS (graduated licensing system) and do all the applicable testing. Wait times will apply.

25) Q: I have a "G2" licence that is expiring but I don’t want to take the highway test, how can I keep my "G2" licence?

A: You are required to pass the G2 road test in order to keep your G2 licence. If you fail the G2 road test at the time of your expiry, your licence will be downgraded to G1.

26) Q: My out of province licence has expired; can I still exchange it for an Ontario Licence?

A: You may exchange your licence for up to one year after the expiry date, provided that you have a full "G" licence for two years in the last three years from Canada, the U.S.A and other reciprocating jurisdictions (Japan, Korea, Germany, Austria, Australia, Isle of Man, Switzerland, France, Great Britain and Belgium).

27) Q: What are some common mistakes people make on their road test?

A: The most common mistakes that can result in the failure of a road test are:

  • Failure to yield right of way to vehicles or pedestrians (particularly at intersections),
  • Unsafe lane changes such as failing to your check blind spots or failing to properly estimate speed of other traffic,
  • Disobeying traffic signals or signs, including not coming to a full stop at Stop Signs,
  • Improper turns such as turning into the wrong lane,
  • Impeding traffic by traveling too slowly or not moving the vehicle when you are given right of way,
  • Loss of control of the vehicle,
  • Speeding unnecessarily (when it is not required to safely merge with traffic),
  • Merging onto a highway more slowly than the speed of the highway traffic, and
  • An accumulation of too many minor driving errors that indicate insufficient overall driving skills.

The root cause of many of these errors is poor observation skills, or a lack of familiarity with appropriate driving techniques and laws in the Province of Ontario. It is important to recognize that the expectations in Ontario may be different than in other Provinces or Countries. To understand what is expected of a driver in Ontario, you should thoroughly read Chapters 2, 3 and 6 of the MTO Driver’s Handbook. Even if you are a very experienced driver, this will explain what the Driver Examiner will be looking for on your Road Test.

The very best way to ensure a successful road test is to take Driver Education from a reputable Driver Training School, and to practice driving throughout the periods of time between licence classes (G1, G2 and G). As you gain experience, refer back to the MTO Driver’s Handbook to make sure you are still driving the way you should have been taught in your Driver Education program. Otherwise, you may develop bad driving habits that can lead to an unsuccessful Road Test.

28) Q: How many times can I take a road test if I fail?

A: You may take as many road tests as you want until you pass, provided your driver’s licence is valid; however, there is a ten-day wait before you are able to book and attempt subsequent tests.

A: Yes, it is allowed to use a rental car for a road test.

A: No, none of our DriveTest centers provide vehicles for any road test.

31) Q: I booked my road test via the internet, however, the browser froze while I was in the process of booking; how do I book for my road test?

A: MTO’s booking system works best with Internet Explorer. It is possible that it may not work properly with Mozilla. If you are unable to book online, you may call our automated phone booking system at 1-888-570-6110.

32) Q: I cancelled my road test online three times and now I am unable to book further tests, what should I do?

A: The system flags any road test cancelled over three times. In order to book a test, you must contact our Call Centre at 1-888-570-6110 to book a road test, or visit a DriveTest Centre in person.

33) Q: I would like to pay for my road test fee with a certified cheque, whom do I make the cheque payable to? Where do I mail my cheque?

A: You can make the cheque payable to either DriveTest or Serco DES Inc. You can mail your cheque to the centre of your choice for the road test. You must enclose a note with your name, driver’s licence number and your telephone number. The DriveTest centre will contact you once they received your cheque to book your road test.

34) Q: What method of payment is accepted by DriveTest?

A: DriveTest accepts all major credit cards and debit cards. Travellers cheques, money orders, bank drafts and certified cheques made payable to "DriveTest" are also accepted. Personal cheques are not accepted at Drive Test centres.

35) Q: I cancelled my road test paid by credit card on the Internet; but my credit card was not credited. How do I get my money back?

A: You may apply for a refund by:

  • Going to any DriveTest centre and filling out a refund form,
  • Contacting our office by email at CustomerComments@drivetest.ca, or
  • Writing us at Serco DES Inc., 5000 Yonge St., Suite 1402, Toronto, ON, M2N 7E9.

36) Q: I have not received my refund, who do I contact to follow up?

A: You may write at CustomerComments@drivetest.ca where your concern will be forwarded to the Refunds Administrator.

37) Q: My license was lost/stolen? How do I obtain a replacement license?

A: You may go to any Service Ontario Driver and Vehicle License Issuing Office to have your licence replaced. You will be required to have your photo retaken. You must provide acceptable identification that shows your legal name, date of birth and signature and pay a $10 fee.

If your driver’s licence has been stolen, you are also required to report it to your local police.

38) Q: How long does it take before I receive my permanent driver’s licence card?

A: It takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks for your permanent card to come in the mail. Your temporary driver’s licence will enable you to drive for 90 days.

39) Q: My temporary driver’s license is expiring but I have not received my permanent licence on the mail, what do I do?

A: You may call Service Ontario Driver and Vehicle Licensing Call Centre at 416-235-2999 or toll free at 1-800-387-3445 or visit your local Driver Vehicle Licence Issuing Office where you may request for a temporary Driver’s Licence. 42) Q: I am from a non-reciprocating country with driving experience. Am I required to take a road test?

A: Yes, you will be required to take a road test.

  • Applicants who declared less than 12 months driving experience are subject to the mandatory wait period totaling one year before taking the G2 road test.
  • Applicants who declared a minimum of 12 months driving experience but less than 24 months in the preceding three years are eligible to take the G2 road test without the mandatory wait period. Once you passed the test, you will be granted a "G2" licence. Additional driving experience over 12 months will be applied towards the G2 12-month waiting period prior to taking the G road test.
  • Applicnts who declared a minimum of 24 months driving experience in the preceding three years have the option of attempting either the G2 or G road test without the mandatory wait period. However, should you opt to attempt the G road test; you will only be given one chance to do so. If you are unsuccessful, you will be required to pass the G2 road test first before you can be allowed to re-attempt the G road test. There is no limit to the number of G2 road tests that you can attempt until you pass.
  • Please note that you are required to declare your driving experience at the time of application. You will also be required to present written authentication of your foreign driving experience from the originating licensing agency, or from the Embassy, Consulate or High Commissioner’s office. For more information on this requirement, please refer to http://www.drivetest.ca/en/license/OutOfCountryDrivers.aspx If you fail to declare your driving experience at the time of application and obtained a G1 licence, you will not be eligible to return at a later date to be credited with any driving experience either by self-declaring or by presenting an authentication document. Hence, you will be required to serve all GLS mandatory wait period.

44) Q: I have an expired “G” licence. What are the requirements for renewing my licence?

A: You may go to any of our DriveTest Centres to renew your licence and will be required to present acceptable identification apart from your expired licence.

Please refer to http://www.drivetest.ca/en/license/HowToApply.aspx for a list of acceptable identification.

Furthermore, if the name in your expired driver’s licence did not match the name on the ID you presented, you will be required to present supporting documentation to provide a link to the names.

45) Q: What happens when my novice driver’s licence is cancelled upon third occurrence under novice escalating sanctions?

A: When you receive a third escalating sanction penalty, your novice driver’s licence will be cancelled and any existing time credited or fees paid will be forfeited. You must re-apply into the GLS program by passing a vision and knowledge test and pay all licensing fees. After you pass these tests, you will enter Level One and get a Class G1 or M1 licence. You must serve all the Level One and Level Two waiting periods and start as a new driver. You would need to take a beginner driver education again to qualify again for a time discount.

A: Yes. For EDL holders, drivers will need to repeat an in-person application (including booking an appointment, pre-screening, payment of EDL fee and interview) to receive a new EDL card. Drivers can opt not to apply for all EDL when they re-apply for graduated licensing.

48) Q: Will I lose my pre-paid fees upon the third escalating sanction?

A: Yes. All your pre-paid fees (knowledge and road test) will be lost. You will be required to pay all fees again when you re-apply for graduated licensing.

49) Q: How will Escalating Sanctions for novice drivers and the Zero BAC requirement for fully-licensed drivers 21 and under impact out-of-province/out-of-country drivers?

A: Out-of-province/out-of-country drivers will be subject to Escalating Sanctions and Zero BAC requirements, the same as Ontarians.
